Community Service Project of the RCPTA 2023

This year the RCPTA selected two underprivileged schools in the Polonnaruwa district, namely Galoya Handiya Kanishta Vidyalaya, and Rotawewa Kanishta Vidyalaya. Mrs. Kalyani Abeygunawardana the chief Coordinator of the project meticulously planned the project with the help of the other members in the subcommittee. The project involved the distribution of school books necessary for the new year scheduled to start on the 27th March 2023.

After calling for quotations from three reputed companies, it was decided considering the quality and price of the books to purchase Atlas products, such as exercise books, CR books etc. The requirements were sent by the authorities of the two schools, and accordingly Mr. H.G.P Dharmadasa arranged from a place to get the products at 25% discount. Mrs. Kalyani Abeygunnawardana travelled several times to the Peoples’ Park in Pettah where you could buy all the requirements and all the purchases were taken to Mrs. Ramya Dharmawardana’s place. On the 21st of March many volunteers from the members of RCPTA gathered at Ramya’s place and all the purchases were packed according to the lists sent by the two schools.

We left with our packed books, in the Royal College bus which was given to us free, provided we put the necessary fuel. We are grateful to the Principal of Royal College, Colombo for this wonderful gesture. Two old Royalists, Mr. Lanil Waniganayake, Prof. Saman Bandara and our very own member Mrs. Cissy Peiris donated the money necessary to purchase milk packets which were given to each and every student of the two schools.

We are thankful to the Sri Lanka Army for providing us with the accommodation at a nominal price for the 26th night. As we arrived at the Minnariya Gunners’ Club Army. Camp Lunch was ready for us. As there was enough time before night fall, we were able to worship Somawathi Chaithiya in Polonnaruwa. A member of the armed force accompanied us for our trip to Somawathi Chaithiya.

We were welcomed warmly by the two schools, with breakfast the next day. An assembly was held in both schools followed by the distribution of school books etc.

It was with great satisfaction we all came out after completing the project.

Thank you Kalyani for a well organized trip.
