Social Service Project of the RCPTA – 2023

Distribution of School Exercise books in the Polonnaruwa District

We are pleased to bring to your notice that we were able to recommence the project to offer assistance to underprivileged school children in the country this year. The project had to be stopped for a few years up to last year due to the unstable health situation in the country.
We were all very happy that we got the opportunity to distribute school exercise books on 27th March 2023, which was the opening day of the first school term for 2023.
Two underprivileged schools in the Hingurakgoda Education Zone in the Polonnaruwa district was selected for this purpose. The schools were Galoya Kanishta Vidyalaya and Rotawewa Kanishta Vidyalaya. For the yearly project this year, which is funded by the members of our association, the committee decided to give preference to donate exercise books to school children.
We were pleased to initiate this project in 2023, to suit the need of the school children during these difficult times in a very short time. We bring to your notice with pleasure and gratitude, the contribution made by about 100 of our members and committee members who toiled to complete this project successfully.
The people of the area showed their gratitude and respect to the RCPTA. It was a great satisfaction for us to be able to donate exercise books for 400 students living under immense hardships, and also to be able to present every student from Grade six to Grade eleven a box of Mathematical Instruments. Special mention should be made here that one official from the Department of Education and an official from the District Secretary’s office were also present on the occasion. Assessing the success of the project done by us, we received a special commendation letter sent by the District Secretary, Polonnaruwa.
The estimated cost of the project was Rupees One Million. We are grateful to Mr. H.G.P.Dharmadasa who was instrumental in getting the exercise books at a discounted rate from the Atlas Exercise Books company. Every student was also offered a packet of milk that day. We are thankful to Mrs. manel Munasinghe for finding two donors for the cost of milk packets. Our immense gratitude also goes out to Mrs. Ramya Dharmawardana for making available for us to sort out, pack and store all the relevant parcels till they were removed for distribution that day. Our grateful thanks also go out to the Principal of Royal College, Mr. R.M.M Ratnayake for allowing us to use the Royal College bus for the journey. We only had to bear the cost of the fuel. Our thanks also go out to our former Principal Mr. B.Suriarachchi and former Vice Principal Mr. Ranjith Edussuriya for participating in the project with us along with many others.
Finally, we are happy to say that we were able to complete the project which amounted to Rs. 640,628.75 which is very much less than the estimated cost.
Thanking all of you for the support and in future too in advance.
Mrs.Kalyani Abeygunawardana (Co Ordinator of the project)
